Help Fund Kentucky Schools.

Here is a call to action for all readers of the blogosphere. I have recently discovered a great site called Donorschoose.org. Its sole purpose is to help underfunded public schools with projects that students need. This non profit organization accepts proposals from public school teachers. The proposals are funding requests that outline a specific need a teacher has for a project. As a donor you can select subjects, number of students, regional areas. This allows you to fund projects you care about. The benefit is you cut out the middle man and know what specific area your money is going too.

From the DonorsChoose website

DonorsChoose.org is a simple way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom we call Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund.

Proposals range from “Magical Math Centers” ($200) to “Big Book Bonanza” ($320), to “Cooking Across the Curriculum” ($1,100). Any individual can search such proposals by areas of interest, learn about classroom needs, and choose to fund the project(s) they find most compelling. In completing a project, donors receive a feedback package of student photos and thank-you notes, and a teacher impact letter.

I have created a challenge for all of Kentucky. Currently, there are only two proposals for the state on DonorsChoose. My challenge is relatively small. I want to fund 2 projects for a total of $900. Can you help spread the word? Can you give $10? This two cups of starbucks coffee.

You can also spread the word. Word of mouth is a great way to get these projects funded. If you know a teacher, tell them about this site. Maybe they have a proposal they would like to get funded. Lets all help Kentucky schools.
