People ’simply die for lack of health care’

The courier journal is doing a multi-part piece on healthcare in Kentucky. This article outlines may of the challenges face poor people that do not have adequate medical coverage. One of the striking things that stands out is how long people wait to goto the doctor.

“I see patients that do defer treatment and just don’t have the resources they need,” said Dr. Kenneth Slone, who practices at a small brick clinic near where he grew up in Hindman in Eastern Kentucky. “And they fall through the cracks.”

And as they delay care, their illnesses advance.

“Unfortunately, if you wait long enough, and get sick enough, then you get quick access” at an emergency room, said James Taylor, president of Louisville’s University Hospital.”

This is really sad that this country with all its wealth can let people simply die because they cannot afford healthcare. And that is what we do we ignore the problem and they go away. Remember that the next time you goto a hospital to get treated for a headache.
