Oct 27 looms large in Kentucky

For those of you keeping tabs. Kentucky teachers had a mini-protest strike today. They asked for permission to be off from work. I don’t know if I would categorize a strike as something you asked to do. But anyways, if Governor Fletcher does not give in to the demands of the Teachers and other state employees there will be a strike. I really do believe that a strike may be the only way to resolve this healthcare crisis. The descisions made by the Governor were not really put up for scrutiny by anyone. He chooses not to consult the people his decisions affect. So really why should those same people consult him. By the way where was our Governor during the start of this crisis in Kentucky…..he was in Belgium. He spends more time on economic development trips than in the state! So to the teachers and the school employees I say strike and see what he has to say then.

Kentucky Football gets beat by Florida

After a respectable showing against Indiana, the wildcats had a rough game against Florida this week. In the backdrop of Hurricane Jeanne the Gators blew the wildcats away. I am renewing my call for the Kentucky to spend their football money somewhere else.

Kentucky Gay Marriage Ban

Apparently, a very “scientific” poll was taken in which a majority of likely voters would support a gay marriage ban in Kentucky. I do not understand why people are scared of people that are wired differently than others. The issue of Gay marriage has been hijacked by a small number of people that are trying to scare the average american. They want you to believe that two people getting married will take something away from you. Too many people have opinions about what goes on in the private lives of the citizens in this country. It is no business of anyone to judge someone. Do not throw stones when you live in a glass house. America is a melting pot for all people, remember that next time you criticize someone for being different.

Striking Teachers

Should Kentucky’s Teachers strike? Well lets ignore the fact that a strike is illegal and get to some facts. The first point is yes their Health Care Contributions are going up. If you are a single person there is no worries you pay practically nothing. However, if you are a couple or family under the new government plan then you will be paying a minimum of $300 a month for health care coverage. This may not seem excessive until you get to the real “meat” of the plan. Which is the switch from a co-pay option to a co-insurance option. Basically, this means that if you go to the doctor and have a $1000 bill you are liable for 20% after the deductible is paid. This could get expensive very quickly. Check out this contribution table and tell me how “cheap” the payments are. Of course if you don’t have healthcare I would say that this would be pretty cheap. Food for thought.

Terminated Lobsters from Northern Kentucky

We have had a brush with B-List fame. Edward Furlong who was a talented actor was arrested for freeing lobsters from a meijer store. The scary part is where was he going to free them too? Last time I checked the ocean is quite a drive. No shock that he was a bit tanked.
